Empath Tidewell Hospice is proudly celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Caring Clown CIRCLE, a tradition impacting countless lives since 1995. For three decades, this group of trained hospice volunteer clowns has brought joy, laughter and gentle comfort to hospice patients, their loved one's and residents in assisted living facilities across Sarasota and surrounding counties.
The Caring Clown CIRCLE's mission is built into its name: Clowning with Integrity, Respect, Compassion, and Laughter for Everyone, embodying Empath Health's mission of Full Life Care.

Hospice care is not often viewed as a joyful experience, and this is where Tidewell's Caring Clowns change the narrative. Even amid what can be a difficult transition for patients and families, the volunteer clowns have a unique connection with hospice patients and the ability to bring smiles, open hearts and create lasting memories. With Sarasota's deep ties to clowning history, the Caring Clowns help carry a cherished local tradition. They keep the art of clowning alive in a way that brings comfort, compassion and joy to those who need it most.
Every moment holds meaning, even in life's final chapter. That is the heart of Empath's commitment to Full Life Care. The Caring Clowns embody this promise, bringing laughter and companionship to the present moment. While some may not have years ahead, they have today, and these connections remind us that joy is not postponed, but found here and now.

Meet "Sparky," One of Tidewell's Longest-Serving Hospice Clowns
One of the longest-serving Caring Clowns is Betty Palsgrove, better known as Sparky. Originally from Washington, D.C., Betty spent over 30 years working with the Food and Drug Administration before moving to Florida in 2002. It was a Halloween costume in the 1980s and a clown camp in Wisconsin that sparked her interest in clowning, and by 2003 she found her true calling with Empath Tidewell Hospice in Sarasota.
Betty, with her naturally shy personality, transforms into a bright, playful presence when she acts as Sparky. Preparing for each visit takes about an hour and a half as she applies makeup and steps into full costume. She enjoys making balloon animals, performing tricks and creating moments of laughter that often allow people to open up in ways they haven't before. Over the years, Betty has trained 84 new clowns for Tidewell's program, leaving a lasting impact on her community and ensuring the Caring Clown CIRCLE continues to thrive.
When asked about the impact of clowning, Betty shared a moment when a hospice patient who hadn't spoken in weeks suddenly engaged after a visit. "We get smiles. We get a lot of smiles," she says.
That's the gift of this work.
